This is an amazing, unique piece, a carved wooden treasure, a period war chest usually made for the rememberance of the fallen hero within the soldier´s family or as gift. It was meant to contain and preserve personal belongings of a soldier such as Soldbuch, awards, citations, letters, pics etc.
This piece was obviously ordered by a Luftwaffe unit. It is a very important masterpiece, unique and completely hand made and hand carved. It originally had 4 feet that were, at some point, removed. This beauty is in untouched original condition combined with fine patina - the inside is divided in two parts.
This box was brought back to US by a soldier in 1945, after the end of the war, along with other war booty. The family of the soldier, from which this box comes, still lives in NY.
